From Manual Chaos to Streamlined Operations - O&M at SafEarth
A case study in reducing complexity through thoughtful product design.
My Role
I led the end-to-end product design, from workflow mapping to final UI delivery.
This included:
Collaborating with product managers to understand business priorities.
Interviewing field teams to uncover pain points.
Iterating from low-fidelity drafts → final production designs.
Building a design system for web and mobile to ensure scalability.
Overview
SafEarth needed a platform to manage operations and maintenance (O&M) activities for solar power plants. The challenge was to move away from scattered spreadsheets and manual workflows, and build a single digital product that gave managers visibility, helped field teams plan tasks, and streamlined reporting.
Problem
Managers lacked a centralized dashboard to track tasks and site activities.
Field teams faced friction when creating and updating tasks.
Planning was error-prone due to scattered manual systems.
Empty screens gave no guidance, making first-time use confusing.
Goals
Create a single source of truth for O&M activities.
Improve planning efficiency via a clear Calendar view.
Reduce errors in task creation and tracking.
Design a system scalable across plants and workflows.
Solution
To transform the O&M workflow, I designed:
Calendar View | Clear visibility into scheduled activities with color-coded statuses and quick task actions. |
Create Activity Flow | A guided step-by-step task creation process that reduced errors and ensured completeness. |
Empty States | Screens that encouraged first-time users to take action, instead of leaving them with blanks. |
Final Dashboard | A unified view where managers and field teams could collaborate seamlessly, scalable for future modules. |
Before vs After
Before
Add New Plant ![]() | Plant List ![]() |
Calendar View ![]() | Dashboard ![]() |
After
Add New Plant ![]() | Plant List ![]() |
Calendar View ![]() | Dashboard ![]() |
Empty Case
Calendar View - Empty Case ![]() |
Dashboard - Empty Case ![]() |
Impact/Results
Improved task completion rates by providing clarity and guidance.
Reduced planning errors through structured flows and validations.
Increased adoption across field teams by designing approachable, helpful empty states.
Created a scalable design system that accelerated SafEarth’s ability to add new features.
Takeaways
Designing for O&M showed me the importance of clarity in complex workflows. By simplifying task creation and introducing supportive UI patterns, I helped SafEarth’s teams shift from manual chaos to digital efficiency. This project strengthened my ability to balance business strategy, usability, and system thinking — skills I bring into every new challenge.
